Diet in Recovery

At The Well Recovery Center, we believe that recovery is about freedom from addiction—but it’s not just about that. It’s about a big-picture, whole-person approach to health. It’s about health of the mind, body and spirit. As such, it encompasses a wide range of habits and practices. That includes nutrition. Certainly you know the old expression, you are what you eat. Well, in a very real way, the nutrients that you consume form the basis of your bodily health; that, in turn, sets you up for strong mental health, focus, and clarity. The bottom line is that, if you want to succeed in your recovery, you’ve got to eat right. You’ve got to give your body the fuel it needs.

As such, it may be worth this reminder: A little bit of sunshine can go a long way, and put you in a much happier place than you would be otherwise. This is not an old wives’ tale, either. Science confirms it: Even a few minutes spent outside, in sunny weather, can improve your mental wellbeing.

Understanding the Opiate Epidemic

Currently, the United States faces a major healthcare crisis—a crisis that revolves around opiate addiction. The Center for Disease Control reports some staggering, sobering numbers: In 2014, more people died from drug overdoses than in any other year on record—and a majority of those deaths were linked to opiates. “And since 1999, the number of overdose deaths involving opioids (including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin) nearly quadrupled,” the CDC continues. “From 2000 to 2014 nearly half a million people died from drug overdoses. 78 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose.”

Does Addiction Cause Anxiety and Depression?

It is not uncommon for those who battle addiction to struggle with other mental health disorders, as well—including trauma, and, most commonly, depression and anxiety. These are called co-occurring conditions, and though there may be some overlap between the symptoms, the underlying conditions remain distinct from one another. Why do these disorders so commonly co-occur, though? Is it fair to say that addiction causes anxiety and depression? Not exactly—though the cause-and-effect relationship here can certainly be complicated.
